Purim 2018

February 28, 2018

The dates for Purim 2018 are March 1st and March 2nd.

Purim begins at sunset today, Wednesday, February 28th and ends at sunset Friday, March 2nd.

Purim celebrates the victory of the Jews over those who would try to oppress or kill them. It is one of the most enjoyable festivals on the calendar, celebrated by reading the Book of Esther, during which people will boo, howl, hoot and shake noisemakers whenever Haman’s name is mentioned.

Many homes, synagogues and Jews celebrate by putting on plays and dressing up as one of the characters, especially Esther, Mordecai, and Haman. Dressing up symbolizes the way Esther’s true identity was hidden until Esther put on her royal clothing and revealed herself to King Ahasuerus. Food is an important part of the festival as well and many send baskets filled with two kinds of food and drink to each other. Others will give money to the needy or to charities they support. Purim is such a popular holiday that it will continue to be celebrated after the Messiah comes (Midrash Mishlei 9).
